Our Story: From Lemongrove Spice Co. to LELU Soap Lab
Before LELU Soap Lab, there was Lemongrove Spice Co.
My name is Stephanie, and my love for natural skincare began back in 2008. Inspired by bloggers, YouTubers, and naturalists who championed healthy, chemical-free living, I was determined to create products that were kind to the skin — and to the planet.
At 25, I bought my first handmade soap book by Tatiana Hill. After crafting my first cold-process soap — Oatmeal, Milk & Honey — and experiencing the difference on my own skin, I was hooked. The smoothness, silkiness, and purity were undeniable, and I couldn’t wait to share it with family, friends, and anyone who would try it. Encouraged by the overwhelming positive feedback, I launched Lemongrove Spice Co., dedicated to creating small-batch, natural soaps with sustainable, cruelty-free ingredients.
However, dreams sometimes face hard realities. Despite steady growth, financial barriers and the economic downturn in 2011 forced me to close the business after four years. It was heartbreaking. Facing layoffs and mounting responsibilities, I had to pivot — taking on two full-time jobs just to stay afloat.
Still, God had a plan greater than my own. Eight months later, driven by a spirit of service and a deep love for our country, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy. I put my soap-making dreams on hold for nearly eight years, focusing on serving with pride and resilience.
In 2018, during my second tour in the Middle East, a simple conversation over dinner reignited the spark. Talking about the satisfaction of building something with your own hands, I realized how much I missed the joy and fulfillment soap-making brought me. I knew it was time to dream again.
A Fresh Start: The Birth of LELU Soap Lab
After 18 months of planning, researching, and prayerful reflection — with the support of my best friend and business partner — LELU Soap Lab was born in San Diego, CA, in 2020.
This time, I came back stronger, wiser, and more determined. I had learned from past failures that setbacks are not the end — they are lessons, opportunities to grow deeper, stronger, and more resilient. Every stumble shaped me into who I am today, and every challenge became a stepping stone toward a renewed mission: to create pure, purposeful skincare rooted in faith, love, and craftsmanship.
At LELU, we handcraft every product with intention — using natural, skin-loving ingredients and a spirit of gratitude for the blessings and second chances we've been given.
Over the past few years, we’ve poured our hearts into connecting with our community through local pop-up markets, sharing our passion face-to-face, and building a loyal customer base in San Diego. Every conversation, every smiling face, and every repeat order has been a reminder of the beautiful journey we’re on.
What's Next
As we prepare for our next chapter — moving to the Windy City for our next military duty station — we are excited to expand our online presence and bring LELU Soap Lab to even more homes across the country.
Though the scenery may change, our mission remains the same: to honor God first, create products with love and excellence, and continue crafting skincare that nourishes both body and spirit.
